Upon registering for classes for spring 2014 in the Fall a serious problem developed as a result of the rapid growth of UH’s Digital Media Program. The program was forced to move all upper level Digital Media courses to the UH’s Sugar Land campus in order to keep up with the program's rapid growth. It soon became quite apparent to me that in all the chaos of this rapid growth nobody stopped to think how particular students in certain situations would get to class (i.e. International, Out-of-state, On-campus). With the guidance of my program coordinator that is where I stepped in. Dr. Waite agreed with me that students who are typically on tight budgets needed a cost-free option in order to get to their classes that are offered only at the Sugar Land campus. His suggestion was to create petitions in order to collect signatures of the affected students body. Along with the creation and collection of petitions an email explaining the problem was sent to UH’s President, Chancellor Khator, along with the head of the appropriate department within UH Parking and Transportation. I was ultimately scheduled to be on the agenda for a TPAC (Transportation and Parking Advisory Committee) board meeting and deliver the physical signatures along with a presentation explaining the problem and the need for a shuttle line. As a result the UHSL shuttle line was implemented by the beginning of the spring semester to provide a cost-free alternative for students to get their classes without exhausting their own limited resources.
