LEADERSHIP

Throughout my studies at the University of Houston, I have taken the opportunity to write several papers on my perspective of leadership and management within organizations and post them online for my peers to engage in discussions with me. In addition, I have also lead and developed management projects such as implementing a Lean Six Sigma process within a peer's automotive detailing business.

Goal

Setting

In this paper, I discuss some of the concepts I found in a book called The Goal that I believe are essential to helping an organization make right goals and go about the right method in meeting their goals. I wanted to provide a paper that could summarize these key concepts for individuals in organizations that have trouble setting goals and accomplishing them.

Managing Projects

My aim for this paper was to break down the basics of project management to emphasize that there are simple yet fundamental concepts that can maximize a project's chances at success. I wanted to provide individuals who had trouble managing their project a short read that discussed how important it is to not overlook small steps during the entire course of the project.

Quality Improvement

This paper details how I planned to implement the Lean Six Sigma process to an auto detailing business. The goal of this plan was to reduce the amount of unpaid time the business spent in-between jobs. The plan proved to be very favorable for the business and was put into action. The outcome of the process was successful and did in fact help the business reduce unpaid time.

Team

Leadership

This document is a team charter I led in developing for a research project for a course. Initially, the team was hesitant to provide input, but I was able to get everyone involved and put forth their own contributions to the charter. This charter's purpose was to provide documentation for all team members on the agreed upon norms and procedures to help us resolve issues in a orderly manner.

Technology

Technology has allowed digital media to make great strides in terms of workflow efficiency. My journey through the Digital Media program at the University of Houston as introduced me to many of the technological advances that have improved the way work is produced. Some of the technological tools I have worked with include XMPie for variable data printing, PREPS for page imposition, and a densitometer to measure the ink density of a printed image.

I worked with XMPie to create postcards that utilized variable printing to make them more personal for a large audience from a database. My goal in the design was to make the postcard intriguing to the customer, but also have them feel a connection with the bakery.

Through this study, I was able to discover how applications such as Photoshop can utilized in a way that is different from the norm to solve other problems. By combining science and math along with the information that Photoshop provides, the density values of a production can be adjusted before it goes to print.

This is a booklet that I created in InDesign and used PREPS to impose. I chose to make this booklet because I wanted to have something to help me inform other people of a unique part of my culture. Lion dancing is something I am passionate about and am actively involved with.

Science

Before joining the Digital Media program, I was a biology major. During this time, I wrote several scientific research papers and built a solid understanding of the physics and chemistry behind colors that has benefited me in the digital media industry.

Lysozyme Crystallization

In this research I conducted, I wanted to evaluate how varying levels of pH and salt affected the crystallization of an enzyme known as Lysozyme. The paper details my research, method, procedures, and findings. I also wrote an additional section that discusses why the results from my research are true to theory. The target audience for this paper was biochemistry students at the junior or senior level.

Identifying unknown Bacteria

The research detailed in this paper utilizes well multiple known scientific tests with predictable outcomes. By using these tests, I was able to determine the specific strain of bacterial I was given in my sample. I believe this research was important because it clearly shows how you can use known information to logically figure out the unknown. The audience that I was trying to reach in this paper were students in a microbiology class.

Art

Art and creativity has made up a core part of the work I produce in the Digital Media program. I was give many opportunities to showcase my skill in art. Through these various opportunities, I was able to hone the creativity in my work into my own unique style. I am the most effective at showing all of the aspects of digital media through the art that I produce.

Photography

This photo was taken during a nighttime photo shoot I was doing. By chance, a thunderstorm rolled close by, and I took the opportunity to take the photo in such favorable circumstances. This photo is one of my favorites because of how much time and patience it took to get the settings and the timing just right to catch an idea streak of lightning.

This photo was part of a photo journal I was putting together that focused on how perspective can change ordinary things. This photo was my one of my favorites from the shoot because I enjoy drinking different kinds of teas. I also really liked how the teas created a spectrum of different colors.

Video

This video was filmed for my final project for video production. I enjoy watching drone footage and wanted to try it out for myself for this project. I chose to film the University of Houston of all places because I knew the university has some amazing views from the top of the parking garages. I carefully chose specific times, places, and events in order to capture more than just the beauty of the university. This video was also entered in the Digital Media Program's 4th Annual Red VidFest and won first place in the promotional and informational category.

Magazines

I created this magazine because I always enjoyed the look and feel that automotive magazines have. I wanted to create my own automotive magazine mock-up that had my own creative design to it while also applying some of the amazing technology features that is available by making a magazine electronic. The intended audience for this magazine are car enthusiasts.

Business

During my studies at the University of Houston, I had the opportunity to develop several business plans and business proposals for actual pending start-ups. In this area, I got to utilize my business marketing skills along side my finance, and management skills. The business plans I helped developed were complete and ready for actual submission if the potential business owner decided to move forward.

Investment proposal

This is the investment portfolio I helped put together created to expand a business that is owned by a peer. My primary roles in the proposal was researching the information, ensuring facts were accurate, and putting together all of the business financials. The final proposal was put together well enough that my peer actually considered using the actual proposal for his business.

Video proposal

This video is the accompanying video proposal for the investment proposal. It is directed towards investors and gives an oversight into the business. I played a large role in producing the video and ensuring that the facts and research for the video were accurate.
