Binding label for portfolio, using personal branding.

Provided here are several sheets of imposed postcards and cut samples (double-sided with bleed) that utilize variable data printing but this time implementing my personal brand. The variable data was implemented through the use of XMPie applications within InDesign. The design displays a QR code with my information, personalized greeting cartoons, images applicable to specific customer offers, the recipient’s portrait wearing my brand’s “ears”, proper mail indicia, a USPS intelligent mail barcode, and a 10-digit barcode for expiration date and customer number. The document is designed to meet all postal service requirements. Printed directly through InDesign by using the Dynamic Print option provided by XMPie.

This project displays grayscale portraits before and after dot gain compensation. Images on the left were not properly adjusted for dot gain, resulting in overly dark printed reproduction. Images on the right however, were adjusted for a 27% dot gain and show an improvement in reproducing true density. The second page displays the same concept but was printed by creating a plate and printing on a press. Dot gain measurements of the sample have also been provided.

For this project, I recorded K value measurements for the circled portions of each image, which established a darkness range and optical density for the selected spots. Accurate density is crucial in the printed reproduction of images, calculated through a relationship between incident and reflected light (density is the log the inverse of the reflection).
