Branding and Package Design Project for Chocolates by Jeanne
August-December2016
Chocolates by Jeanne, a Cottage Industry Company, needed branding and packaging for their wide range of homemade sweets. I created branding and illustrated graphics for five packages using ArtiosCAD and Adobe Illustrator that were space efficient, versatile, and easy to pack. I presented 24 physical package prototypes to provide the owners a visual sample and developed 3D PDFs of each package for them to view on screen.
Design Inspiration
Chocolates by Jeanne was a Cottage Industry Company, meaning that they make their sweets in a home kitchen and could only sell face to face. They get to sell their homemade sweets at places like farmer’s markets. Jeanne (second from the left) is a kind woman who decided to follow her dream while at the same time giving back to the community. Her daughter Keira (middle in red) helped her start her own business making her sweets. Jeanne's caring and charismatic personality is what inspired the branding I created for her packaging.
Branding
Jeanne needed brand that would tie her products together and make them stand out in a crowded farmers market. I went with warm, inviting colors with blue for a pop of color. Gold foul also adds a touch of elegance and high value to the packaging. Anywhere where yellow-tan is used is meant to be a place holder for gold embossing.
Original Packaging
They used pre-made boxes and printed the gold labels for all their products themselves. Jeanne and Keira were looking for more personalized and professional packaging, but wanted to keep the same dimensions and the gift box like feel. They also wanted the packaging to have wide openings so that they were easy to pack. Their target audience is the middle to high class, people of all ages.
Toffee Box Top View
The toffee box has a window on the lid so that people can easily see the goodies inside. The sleeve covers the box, and has the ingredients, company information, and Cottage Industry information on it. The sleeves will vary by color to indicate the type of toffee, so that the owners and customers can easily identify the contents.
Toffee Box Front View
This panel makes it easy for new customers to identify the package contents when boxes are stacked by having the name front and center. The color of the sleeve also helps identify the contents for returning customers.
Charity
Jeanne also wanted a smaller package that she could put treats in for charity events or as a thank you gift to her customers when they buy a certain amount of goodies. The wide and easy folding top, as well as angled sides make these smaller packages easy to fill.
Energy Bar
Instead of wrapping their bars in a plastic wrapper like all other energy bar, a paperboard package would make their energy bars stand out as high quality as compared to others. I designed it with a sleeve with the same information and color identification as the toffee box sleeves. The box also has a window and cut out through the sleeve so that customers can see the bar inside (see Jeanne holding it in the image below this slideshow). The energy bars are made in generous portion sizes, so customers cannot finish it in one sitting the package is designed so that they can save it for later.
3D Rendered Packages
I designed the packaging structure using ArtiosCAD and created the graphics in Adobe Illustrator. I imported the graphics into ArtiosCAD to make 3D renders of the packages. This allowed me to test the functionality and view the package designs before creating the physical prototypes. This saved a lot of time and materials bu allowing me to find structural or graphic element problems in the 3D render. This also made it easy to show the client my ideas so they could approve the designs or suggest changes before the final pieces were constructed.
